Most good domains are taken. When a lookup shows "for sale", the domain is listed on a marketplace and can be bought at a fixed price or via negotiation.
How For-Sale Detection Works
Listed domains usually show two signals: nameservers pointing to a parking platform (e.g. ns1.afternic.com, Dan's dan.com NS), or an HTTP redirect to a for-sale landing page with an offer form. ABC Lookup checks both, names the platform and links straight to the listing.
Major Marketplaces
| Marketplace | Model | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Afternic | Distribution network | Listing syndicates to dozens of registrars |
| Dan.com | Buy-now / make-offer | Clean UI, escrowed transfer |
| Sedo | Auctions / brokerage | Veteran platform with buyer brokers |
| Alibaba Cloud / 易名 | CN-market platforms | Convenient for .cn, filing transfer included |
How to Price a Domain
- Length & meaning: 2-4 characters and common word roots command the highest prices.
- TLD: the .com version of a name is often worth 10x any other extension.
- History: aged domains with real history and backlinks carry SEO value — but screen for GFW blocks and search penalties first. The detailed lookup covers all of that in one pass.
For bulk screening, run a bulk lookup and export rows tagged "for sale" to build your shortlist.
